HOW SCORING WORKS

The rules in detail

The board is shuffled by making random legal slides from the solved position (150 for 3 × 3, 300 for 4 × 4), so every puzzle can be solved. Each slide counts as one move; the timer starts on your first move. The puzzle is solved when the tiles read 1 to 8 (or 1 to 15) left to right, top to bottom, with the gap in the bottom-right corner. Each size keeps its own best (fewest moves).

Tips

  • Solve the top row first, then the left column, then the rest.
  • Place the last two tiles of a row together: park one, then rotate the pair in.
  • The 3 × 3 puzzle can always be solved in 31 moves or fewer.
